One of the very first things you need to do if you want to make money online is to get your very own domain…

Now I’m pretty sure you know what a domain is, but just in case www.google.com is a domain name.

Okay, so what exactly do you need to do? Well, you’ve got two choices:

  1. Get a domain with your name in it
  2. Get a domain which is related to your niche

I strongly suggest that the very first domain you buy contains your name in some way or another… The reason for this is mainly to “brand” yourself and let people know who you are and what you’re about! At this point in time you may not even know yet which niche(s) you’ll be entering…

Right… First sort out the “extension.” Now, there’s loads of extensions, but probably the bet know are .com .org and .net

You really do want to get a .com if possible for a few reasons… A .com is thought of as being more “professional” and is also regarded as being more “important” by the search engines.

Onwards… My name is Robert Watkins and I’d have loved to get www.robertwatkins.com…

Unfortunately somebody beat me to it… So what do you do then?

Well, first off look for your name with a hyphen. I was lucky and www.robert-watkins.com was available so I bought it!

Now if you’ve got a more common name such as John Smith then you’re going to be in a spot of bother, so you’re going to have to get a bit creative… Try searching for something like this:

Try working your niche (if you know it) into your domain, like I’ve done above with www.johnsmithmarketing.com

Obviously, the more common your name is, the harder your grey matter is going to have to churn around… Don’t give up! Keep at it until you find one you’re happy with!

Right… So where do you buy a domain name?

Well, there’s loads of places, but a good place is GoDaddy. The main reason is that they’re cheap and their customer service is good.

Remember… All we’re going to do here is buy a domain… nothing else. No hosting, no email addresses, no nothing! Just a domain. If you want you can pay a bit extra to keep your details private… personally I don’t bother – I’ve got nothing to hide!

Now you may know already what niche(s) you’ll be entering and you may want to consider a domain name related to that niche.  (This will be in addition to, not instead of, “your name ” domain). The reason for this is for the search engines to find  your site more easily.

The process is very similar, so in my next post I’ll tell you how to get a niche-related domain name.

See you soon!
